The Metaphysics of Chain Letters This Alphabet of Friendship came to us via e-mail. It had been forwarded from many friends to many others, which is truly a wonderful thing. However, we are deeply troubled by the metaphysical implications of the admonition at the end, which accompanies many such e-mail "good news" items. (we include this only so you will recognize it in the future) It clearly stated that: "If you send this to: 0 people: Something terrible will happen,             like losing a best friend. 1-5 people: You will have a good day. 6-10 people: You will have a great week. 11-15 people: You will have a good month,     and get surprised everyday. 16 & up: You will have a successful life,     and all your dreams will come true!" We are fully aware that everyone's intention in forwarding this e-mail to their friends was one of love. Perhaps they would be shocked to learn, however, that they were also performing an "evil" deed, i.e. BLACK MAGICK, by including a threat of ill-fate if the rules are not followed! This is not Love, nor is it Friendship. This is coercion and manipulation. Some say not to take it seriously ~ then why say it at all? And if not, why should we believe the rest of it? Some say that without it people won't send it to anyone, but instilling fear of retribution in the recipient is simply NOT a message of Love. This is why we all hate chain letters, not because of the content, but because of the guilt-trip! It appears that we have become so distanced from our natural senses that we do not even recognize the inconsistencies of our messages. How can we send a message of supportive friendship, and a threat of the loss of a best friend, in the same note? Might we suggest that people take the time to BE the Friend described above, rather than sending a message of love accompanied by an ultimatum? Why not just delete the "fortune-telling" part, and add your own sentiment?! Then it will be a genuine offering of Love, and totally karma-free (clear conscience).
