Chinese legend says that the Buddha invited all of the animals in the kingdom to gather for a meeting, but only 12 creatures attended. Talkative Rat was first to arrive and even jumped off of Ox's back to ensure his position. The serious, enduring, hard-working Ox was second, followed closely by the honorable Tiger and cautious Rabbit. The outspoken Dragon was fifth to join the others, and then came the philosophical Snake. The seventh creature on the scene was the physically active Horse, who arrived with the artistic Goat. Then came the spirited Monkey and the showy Rooster. The last to join the others were the watchful Dog and the meticulous, resigned Pig. Buddha gave each animal a year of its own, bestowing the nature and characteristics of each to those born in that animal's year. The Chinese say that "This is the animal that hides in your heart."
